Hmmm. I call this quite an accomplishment. For me living in a climate much like where "The Revenant" set was set, I found the reaches too far.
For those who think of cold as an "ice cream" headache, or ski resort nippy this might pass credibly.
The pain, the depravity, the cruelty, the extinguishing of hopes and the sun never shining sets a tone requiring a certain mood for acceptance.
DiCaprio was plausible, credibly realizing his character. Acting job of the century, hardly, but a challenge met.
Tom Hardy, however, really stretched his part, although not without homage to his "Batman" villain.
Small role, but very well played Domhnall Gleeson's part of the C. O.
Notable too Will Poulter and Forrest Goodluck, plucky realizations.
Inarrritu is a clever film maker, good CV and the quality of his work is always top drawer.
Here too, technical tour de force!
The nominations don't surprise me," The Revenant" is a big, difficult, mountain to climb of a project. Prizes are about self reward in Hollywood, this will be a big at on its own back.
Great film, partially, but not fully.
Take Jeremiah Johnson, remove the spirituality, humour, empathy and sunlight from it, have Terrance Malick direct the result, you'd come close to "The Revenant".
