    The Robe

This movie is great for several reasons. It is a very powerful biblical epic that centres on the Crucifixion of Christ yet the movie is based on a historical best seller by Lloyd C. Douglas, not from biblical writings at all! It works so well for many reasons. The central characters, Richard Burton as a Roman Centurion who must oversee the Crucifixion, Jean Simmons at the very top of her status as a Hollywood star, both leads who will undergo incredible spiritual transformations, are so perfectly cast. Victor Mature is a Christian who will ultimately find himself in the Roman Arena of Gladiators in the sequel to the film. Michael Rennie plays a very peaceful Peter, the head of the Christian Band. JAY ROBINSON in his ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATED PERFORMANCE as the Roman Emperor is so startling good in this eccentric performance of yet one more Emperor going mad! By the way, THE ROBE refers to the final vestment worn by Christ before being led to Crucifixion. This film produced and released by 20th Century Fox was an amazing feat in 1953 as the very first film in CINEMASCOPE, something that would revolutionize the HOLLYWOOD INDUSTRY forever, the entire art of film making with this gigantically wide screen process which was literally taken at the time, as one now reads in retrospect, as almost miraculous. Remember film screens until THE ROBE were still as tiny as films from the 30's and 40's. THIS WAS RADICAL! THIS WAS A REVOLUTION in FILM THAT WORKED. For everything this film did from 1953 onward, it MUST BE GIVEN A 10+. With all this THE ROBE has an unforgettable story line, a plot the keeps racing, all directed by genius HENRY KOSTER! It's a superb motion picture, nominated as BEST FILM, ultimately to lose to FROM HERE TO ETERNITY by FRED ZINNEMAN, one of the very artful but commercially successful films of the 1950's. It shows what a hot property ETERNITY was at COLUMBIA. Not even the great art of CinemaScope was able to knock it off as the top most film of 1953.
