    The Sand Pebbles

The iconic man's man Steve McQueen was a legend in his own era, from everything one reads and sees on film, especially from a new documentary on his extraordinary life. He was and remains the quintessential action star who could act with the most dynamic presence on screen. Car and moto races were always part of his life and films, a great looking athletic man who did many of his most dangerous stunts to the consternation of all! Just look at Bullit, The Thomas Crown Affair or any film in his body of work.

THE SAND PEBBLES from 1966 or so was a film in which Steve McQueen could exercise his muscle chops like never before. The film brought him his only Oscar Nomination. This naval drama was almost second nature to him as he had been in the navy as a late teen during a life that was always very tumultuous. This was a different Steve McQueen and he was perfect in this soulful drama directed by Robert Wise. It was all very sad that he died at age 50 from cancer, apparently from the asbestos he was breathing in the boiler rooms while in the navy. He fought like hell to beat the big C but it was too far advanced. I was 2 or 3 when Steve McQueen died. I look at his superlative movies and his incomparable life and one can say that he crammed as much life as he could in the 50 years he had, almost knowing he could go at any minute. This is a true Hollywood Legend!
