After the disastrous "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty " with Ben Stiller, I couldn't make that blasphemous, stupid movie blur my vision of the wonderful James Thurber masterpiece of a short story. Stiller's Walter Mitty was so bad I left half way through the film just unable to put up with another scene or word.
What does one do when a remake sucks big time like Stiller's WALTER MITTY!? Actually quite simple!
Go to the original movie version made by Samuel Goldwyn (circa 1946) starring the exceptional DANNY KAYE and the charming VIRGINIA MAYO with the GOLDWYN GIRLS for an added delightful bonus. Danny Kaye's metamorphosis into Thurber's Walter Mitty is such an astounding piece of acting bravura that I was literally in seventh heaven. What is so marvelous is that the Goldwyn movie is so faithful to the Thurber story. There was no need for filler or changing the dream sequences and action as in the ridiculous Stiller version. The film is so entertaining as we delve into Mitty's daydreaming all shot in the most gorgeous technicolour I have ever witnessed. This WALTER MITTY is such a great family film to boot. Don't worry that it was made back in the forties. It's still very fresh and delightful. You truly will be asking yourself how that abomination of the Stiller "Mitty" ever got on film. Well it bombed big time as it well deserved!
I believe I wrote a review of Stiller's Mitty. I must read it again as I truly did forget how badly I panned it!
Happy Daydreaming!!!
