There will be people who will love this movie, but my date and I found it slow until half the way through. (I used to be a social worker who worked with the homeless, so I was looking forward to this film.) The movie is reminiscent of "Reign Over Me"," Radio"," The Fisher King"," Rainman"," I am Sam"," Shine", or even," Of Mice and Men" - the common theme being a mentor of sorts who is questioning his or her own life and who ends up gaining some cathartic insights though the relationship with a mentally or emotionally-challenged person. "Shine" is the closest comparison to "The Soloist" in that both films are based on true stories about classically trained musicians suffering from schizophrenia, but the storytelling seemed more consistently powerful in "Shine". In spite of the fact that the acting in "The Soloist" was superb, the retelling of the story seemed to lack umph! Until crisis and conflict are introduced halfway through. The other problem (and I don't know if this was only at the theatre where we saw it) was that throughout the entire movie when the two lead characters were talking, the volume was so low that we couldn't make out the dialogue in many scenes. Other people in the theatre also complained as well, so that at the end of the movie the theatre manager apologized and handed free passes to three or four different groups of people. He said that it was due to the film. (There were only fifteen people in the theatre on a Friday night.) - Bottom line: worth seeing in a cinema on a discounted ticket.
