Based on the Tony Winning Play of the same name written and starring Harvey Fierstein, the film of course uses Harvey as the good Jewish boy who wants the good things of life including a fine romance with another young man. The perfect Jewish Mamma is played by Italian superstar Anne Bancroft. The addition of a very young Mathew Broderick in such a key role truly advanced his career. Surprising how frank and open the gay plot was considering it was 27 years ago. It's obviously factual, honest and at times heart-rending. Apparently the film but especially the Broadway play raised considerable eyebrows and it must have been a shot in the arm as the play took top honour at the Tony Awards that year. Brave to film this little play that had been primarily known in New York City.
