Continuing the ongoing tradition of vapid and pointless remakes is Total Recall, the latest example of just how low Hollywood has sunk. The original starring Arnold is a sci-fi classic, punctuated by graphic violence, incredible make-up, brilliant production design and a keen sense of humor. This remake, safe for the production design, abandons everything that made the original a success. It isn't clever, funny, violent or particularly exciting. What little narrative creativity there is, not surprisingly, is completely stolen from the original. Colin Farrell, who is a terrifically versatile actor, is wasted here. He spends most of the film with a wide-eyed, confused look on his face and honestly, action films really aren't his forte. Jessica Biel has so little to do she's not even worth mentioning. Same goes for Bryan Cranston as the villain. Thank goodness director Len Wiseman had the good sense to cast his better half Kate Beckinsale as the relentless operative charged with eliminating Farrell. Her sexy, ass-kicking villainess is the only thing worth recommending here. It's just too bad she's trapped in this formulaic, unimaginative and thoroughly forgettable film. Kept wishing Arnold would show up and just shoot everyone, but alas it never happened.
