We have been talking a lot about Artificial Intelligence even before Steven Spielberg knocked us over the head with "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" some years ago. In the reality of today, scientists are stating that A.I. will in all probability be a reality within the next 30 years. So! This science-fiction movie is not as science fiction as one would suppose. Doctor Will Carter (Johnny Depp), wife (Rebecca Hall) and friends e.g. (Paul Bettany) espouse the theory of TRANSCENDENCE or the uploading of a human brain into a super computer - that would be the loading of EVERYTHING human into the computer. It would become a combination of technology and biology. This is the thesis of the movie as we learn almost as the film begins. To me the film was a teetering back and forth of the good or evil of such continued experiments. When someone is attempting something amoral, something against what might be the common good, one knows humans will rise up in revolt. And so they do. Yet what I have said reveals NOTHING of a convoluted, very technical movie which literally was driving me insane. Thank goodness I saw it on DVD without losing my 13.00 bucks. Half the time I was trying to keep awake to follow the absurdist plot. When eagerly following the million bits of detail thrust at us I certainly was NOT ENJOYING myself because it felt like being captured in a University lecture Hall from which there was no escape. I was trapped in this pretty lousy movie that seemed like a nightmare, bogged down with information I wanted no part of. The "human" element of the story was as predictable as an apple eventually falling off a tree. The acting was BELOW mediocre. Wooden performances, stand and deliver your lines seemed to be the order of the day. Everyone was bad including MORGAN FREEMAN who has rarely given a bad performance. There was a script but I defy anyone to decipher it at even a child's level of intelligence. I truly disliked this film on every level. So sick of these sci-fi, action hero, blow everything up before the end of the movie type films. We've had ENOUGH!!! I was expecting something radically different with TRANSCENDENCE. Talk of being disappointed!
