You have to admire the enthusiasm present in “Underworld”. As for whether or not it’s a good movie…

The battle between vampires and Lycans (werewolves) has raged for over 600 years. Selene (Kate Beckinsale), an elite vampire soldier, encounters Michael (Scott Speedman), a human that holds the key to ending the war. Vampires and werewolves alike are scheming to use him to their own end while Selene contemplates whether to follow her heart or her duty.

I can understand why this series has fans. It’s clear that there’s passion present from writers Len Wiseman (who also directs), Kevin Grevioux and Danny McBride. You can tell that these guys have written a bible to accompany the film; behind the scenes, there’s a rich history of all the vampire elders, custom terminology (such as Selene being called a “Death Dealer”), years’ worth of conflicts, politics, relationships, customs, etc. I also enjoy the twist on the werewolf formula, with the Lycans being able to transform at will and the two factions using high-tech weapons against each other. Instead of capes and wolfbane, they’ve got silver shuriken and UV bullets. It’s ambitious and inventive if nothing else. Special effects creator Patrick Tatopoulos has brought a unique look that makes the film visually distinct.

One of the problems in “Underworld” stems from the fact that there is too much zeal coming from the creators. Someone that wasn’t already convinced that this story was great should’ve stepped in. Perhaps if they had, we would’ve gotten some character development and a story that would’ve been less predictable. The second you see Shane Brolly as Kraven, you know exactly what his deal is. You then have to wait for everyone else to catch up. “Underworld” is like a teenager who wants to convince you that it’s ideas are the coolest thing ever. It tries a little too hard.

Some of the action sequences here are neat, but they’re only included because they’re visually appealing. It’s like anything was given a pass if it was spectacular to look at. Why would anyone bring twin razor-whips to a fight where everyone else has guns? Why would werewolves run on the walls instead of on the floor? Isn’t there a single vampire out there that wants to wear something that isn't black, red or silver? Would a decades-old vampire really fall in love with a man she’s just met?

Everyone’s giving it their all in “Underworld”, but with a half-baked story that only goes so far. There’s a group of people that “Underworld” will appeal to, and they’re going to outgrow it once they leave their teens. I would know. I remember enjoying the "Underworld" series a lot but having seen the prequel, and now this one, I think Kate Beckinsale dressed in leather may have swayed my previous ratings.
