    Unforgiven

Academy Awards and the WESTERN have never really been very good friends over the years. In the over 85 year history of the Academy only 3 Westerns have ever managed to win the top honour as BEST FILM. Cimarron won in 1930/31, the second year of the Oscars, winning also Best Actor for Warner Baxter as the Cisco Kid. HIGH NOON was a shoe-in as BEST Picture in 1952 but lost to one of the worst Oscar Best Films Ever: "The Greatest Show on Earth", 1952 directed by a very mediocre Cecil B. De Mille. It would take 60 long years before another western took home Oscar as Best Picture, Kevin Kostner's DANCES WITH WOLVES in 1990. Just 2 years later Clint Eastwood's classic western masterpiece UNFORGIVEN took top Oscar in 1992.

This unforgettable film should have won an Oscar for BEST ENSEMBLE if such an Oscar existed. This Award is something I wish the Academy would institute. Clint Eastwood's film has a a very simple theme: INJUSTICE in one of hundreds of frontier towns that dotted the old west. When brutal sheriff, Gene Hackman (in an Oscar winning performance) denies justice to the harlots of the town, the gals take action into their own hands. And so along comes Clint. I'm making the film sound pretty simple WHICH IT IS NOT! Not only does the film deal with 'due process', women's rights, a dictatorial, sadistic sheriff, but the protagonist must struggle with his conscious and former way of life. The scenes between Hackman and Eastwood are legendary as the forces of good battle it out with those of evil. Clint himself received an Oscar Nomination as best ACTOR and DIRECTOR winning for Best film and his direction. Hackman is as good if not better than his Oscar Winning Performance in The French Connection. Unforgiven is a great western but an all round glorious film which everyone should see at least once. Not only will you be entertained, but you will witness a grand director creating a veritable masterpiece.
