    Walking with the Enemy

I was very much looking forward and hoping to enjoy this WW II flic as an essential, must see film... a film that deals with Regent Horthy (Sir Ben Kingsley) and his unholy alliance with Hitler and the aftermath which occurred in Hungary. NON MOVIE FACT: Hitler could never be trusted as I've stated on C C many times before. Even his allies like Italy, Hungary, including other allies, of course, were treated like ENEMIES. Remember the Germans overran Italy in 1942, their #1 ally.

THE ABOVE STATEMENT HAS NOTHING DIRECTLY TO DO with Walking with the Enemy, but it's a good point to stress yet again. It goes without saying that the name Hitler is synonymous with everything atrocious in the 20th century, but most don't fully recognize Hitler's demonic EVIL as it related to the very nations who were supporting him! I haven't a clue how these nations allied themselves to this monster, but said countries and their leaders paid a dear price for choosing the arch enemy and total MANIAC as ally. For example Italy lost its Monarchy in a plebiscite and Mussolini was shot and hung! (In many cases, nations had no choice as they were invaded by the Germans.) Pardons for this long waylay, so to speak!

Back to the movie at hand,! A dramatic turn arises with the appearance of a young man named Elek ( Jonas Armstrong ) but one cannot say much about his extraordinary life as the entire movie would be spoiled. The premise of ENEMY was a good, solid one, but for some reason the finished product was not worth much even with such a tremendous tale to tell. This happens more often than one thinks. If one ponders THE GOLDEN COMPASS for a moment, it had all the makings of a great hit but, in fact, was a total dud, critically and box office disaster.

As for Walking with the Enemy, I can't rate it more than a five. It is simply not that good a movie!
