    Way Down East

I'm not too fond of SILENT FILM, but D. W. Griffith's near masterpiece from 1920 starring a resplendent Lilian Gish in one of her greatest performances will astound the viewer. The feature also stars once heart, throb three time Academy Award Nominee Richard Barthelmess who successfully made it into sound films but is today virtually unknown. Lilian's delicacy and the face of a waif portray acting in its finest sense. These were the tool's of a silent film star. This huge drama with incredible shots on icy land and floating icebergs will stagger the imagination even in 2015. This is a true romantic drama and it delivers the goods. I believe Miss Gish herself has said it is one of her greatest films along with one called The Wind. There are silent film fanatics and this film gave me a taste and a reason for the dedication to this art form so far removed from us yet ironically so well known by us. So much of what is done in film today was invented in that silent era. It takes some time and patience to develop a love of the silents, but the greatest traits of movie making are all there minus the dialogue. Take a chance and see some classics of the truly glorious kind perhaps starting with BIRTH OF A NATION (1915), a grand epic of the American Civil War, one of the greatest silent epics.
