I'm not much for the PG rated family films but this one has so much going for it that it really works if you give it a chance. Matt Damon further solidifies himself as a terrifically versatile actor, playing a widower who decides to quit his job and move his two children to a zoo which he has decided to take over. Damon could have easily sleepwalked through this kind of role but he truly invests himself in the part and as a result you truly care about him and his family. The animals are also a real treat. Director Cameron Crowe does tend towards the sentimental, but the fact that the story is true and the great work by Damon, Scarlett Jonhanssen, and Thomas Haden Church as the initially skeptical older brother make this a real winner. Good family film, one that will make you feel genuinely good after.
