    Whiplash

Whether you like jazz or not is irrelevant in this highly charged dramatic film. If jazz is the love of your love, so much the better as this total American art form really becomes a third character in a film that is anything but a musical. Miles Teller, the young man up to bearing anything to be the best at his craft is pitted against the austere, barbaric, even sadistic teacher played by J. K. Simmons, a character actor who has literally appeared in a ton full of movies. Despite this, no one really knows who this brilliant character actor is, perhaps recognizing him as "Oh! That guy!" once the film got rolling. I'm so pleased that he has finally landed a role that will put a face to the name. I AM POSITIVE HE WILL BE THE HANDS ON FAVOURITE TO WIN THE OSCAR AS BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR OF 2014. I've seen him in many movies and he is always so grounded and real. This role puts him in a higher echelon with the chance to shine as brilliantly as many major stars. This all reminds me of the time CHRIS COOPER won a Best Supporting Oscar for the film ADAPTATION, a little moment in history when this basically unknown actor starring in a Meryl Streep/Nicolas Cage movie walked away with top honours. And there he stood... accepting an OSCAR! Cooper is another of our brilliant character actors. This happens infrequently but when it does it's so very satisfying for the under dog.
