My lasting memory of this film will not be the performances, the plot or the politics. It will be the beautiful landscape showing Tennessee in the fall. I believe Kazan tinted the screen to accentuate the colours. No matter. Lee Remick offered the only challenge to the the horizon's beauty. Gorgeous. Was her character sufficiently desperate in the the film? Did Jo Van Fleet appear sufficiently ornery? Quite frankly, all character presentations were OK or better than OK except for the male lead IMO. Montgomery Clift seemed more like a cardboard character than a living, breathing human being. The only time he showed emotion was when it appeared someone was going to damage his car. It wasn't even his car. It belonged to his boss.
