Jennifer Lawrence as 17-year old Ree Dolly shows a poise and prowess beyond her years in her perfomance of the hillbilly girl beset with problems which would destroy most adults. The film incorporates a scenario of brutal truths and stark emotions. This is a bare-bones epic of America involving the poorest of the poor in rural Mississippi. You can plainly view a dreary landscape of grimy shacks, garbage-strewn backyards and rusty shells of abandoned vehicles. You can experience the hopelessness and despair born of decades of poverty as seen in the sad and weary eyes of the inhabitants. The authenticity is enhanced by the filmmakers' use of various local types as actors and extras. This movie won the Sundance Prize (Last year the winner was Precious) This is a film of exceptional merit, a must-see. Hopefully, it will achieve some finacial success and also awards acceptance (especially for lead actress, Lawrence)
