This happened to be a far more to its source of material than the actual popular Disney version and farther from it in tne than one might ever imagine. It was considered to be a very memorable and unique film experience that feels strangely familiar filled with creatue that are scary. The movie had turned Carrolls novel even a more explicitly inton an examination of a young girls psyched. The very first moments of the film had revealed the novels opening in which Alice had lounged on a riverbank with her bookish sister, as an imaginary construct and the rest of the stories ad ventues had taken on acute sadness as a result. If this Alice has to invent even her boring sister, the creaton of Wonderland seems a desperate cry for help from a profoundly lonely girl. The room that represents her reality is filled with sundry artifacts that all turn up later in her fantasy and all along we are reminded that the film is a dream since whenever a character had spoken. We see an extreme close-up of the girls lips narrating in this story. This approach results in an uneasy alliance with the movie, since we want to fall into the faaantasy completely, but cannot ignore the functions that it serves to us as viewers since Suankmajer is always reminding us its falsehoods. The presentation of Alices fantasy itself is as boldly conceived as the films setup. The movie happens to be considered unbashedly indulgent in many of Suankmagers recurring themes. Logic is applied liberally throughout tothe point where it becomes wholly illogical and as a result the film itself seems to linger with a child's quiliness point of view, some of the nonsense that is inherit in our society's way of thinking. These themes tend to suggest the alienated Alice's growing disatisfaction with the civilization that surrounds her but incomplete realizations of how the world works and provides what might be the reasons behind her retreat into a dream world. The movie itself becomes nothing less than Bunellion rant against the ills of consumer ist society but it never betrays Carroll's framework, which had a bit of a evolutionary spirit itself. If Alice is never explicitly fightening, it also never becomes good enought that you can feel comfortable while watching it, but we probably should not be complacent while viewing a portrait of a socialy disaffected child. This film Alice has mixed live action with puppet animation. Only one person appears in this film, little Kristyna Kohoutova, who almost rave look typifiles this fairly serious version of the absured story. The version of the story alternates between funny and serious and is more interesting than entertaining. The really impressive aspect of the film is Suankmajers animation, the meticulous creation of eighty four minuts of this type of hand-made animation is nothing that amazes us.
