Mike Leigh is a master of dramatic and comedic sutlety and demonstrates this in this story of a very stable 60ish British couple (Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen) who form the nucleus for a group of dysfunctional friends who just can't seem to cope. Lesley Manville turns in what should have been an Academy Award winning perfomance as one of these sad but humorous characters. Stunning performance! All of the acting is first class. If you liked Leigh's "Secrets and Lies", you will love this film.
