Cloverfield

I could write a review of this movie without revealing anything at all, but I really don't want to. I had seen the teaser, and I had heard initial bad press (without reading any details) I had also heard the words "Blair Witch", which scared me because I bit into the Blair Witch hype back then, and was seriously disappointed. So I admit that I really did not want to see Cloverfield. That being said, someone told me that the writing was supposed to be really good. That being said, I caved in and went to see it this evening. Cloverfield is a great movie. A solid 8/10. Don't miss it. Ever wonder what it feels like to witness a disaster? This movie brings you right to the forefront of a catastrophe. Yes, it's shot with a handheld camera, but after you get used to the motion, you then feel like you are a member of the group, struggling to come to grips with what's going on, all while trying to survive it. The special effects were very well done, from the first tease of the monster to the close-ups. All things considered, I was quite impressed! The writing is in fact solid and consistent. The acting (all unknown actors to me) is very convincing, to the point that it too makes you feel like you are actually witnessing these events for real. This movie is not for everyone. There are frightening moments, at least more than I would have expected in a PG movie. But I find it very original, and for once a monster movie actually delivers! This more than makes up for the disaster that was Godzilla!!!
