The title of this film, from the German novel by Thomas Mann, is most appropriate as tourists flood Venice at a time of cholera in the early part of the 20th century! The feature becomes a touching portrait of an aging fop who vacations in Venice and falls into a deep infatuation for a lad staying at this first rate hotel Dirk Bogarde gives a staggering performance as the aging Ashenbach.'Ashen' in German means ashes and basically would describe this ashen looking man trying to pass himself off as a younger, well to do sort. It's all too sad and pathetic as the young lad is totally oblivious to everything. The great Silvana Mangano gives one of her last film roles as the mother of Tadzio, the young lad. Luchino Visconti directed this magnificent film which went on to international acclaim, all the while becoming a classic. A must see film!
