I am torn about my feelings about this new Dolan project, 'JUSTE LA FIN DU MONDE.' It is Dolan's highest profile movie with some of the greatest French actors of the day whose performances, unfortunately, vary a good deal in consistency! Based on a play with tweaks here and there, the family drama is not totally satisfying though it won the Grand Prix at Cannes and has already been chosen by Canada as its OSCAR entry for 2016. I didn't have much problem with the material beginning with the return home of a gay writer/son as the feature turns into a battle royale of the sort that has been seen on screen for a long time, even dating back as far as Albee's A Delicate Balance. That, in fact, is my main problem! It is hardly an original premise for the screen. Other dark family dramas have fared much better. But for its several faults, I cannot say I disliked the film and will certainly recommend it to friends. 6 or 7?
