I can't believe all the 9's and 10's I'm seeing on this board. I guess I've become far too critical. Now I like a good revenge movie but this one just didn't do it for me. The movie opened with the slaughter of wife and child, but there was no build up to show any family bonding, which is a prerequsite for a good revenge movie. The plot lacked any cohesion and as a result the director kept popping characters into the scenes, the only reason I could think of was to keep the storyline facts straight or to kill time. The acting was atrocious, Foxx just coasted for a paycheck, and "marble mouth" Butler can't act to begin with. This movie is about as thrilling as a dinner with the mother-inlaw. Towards the end when the screen was particularly bright (during the final scene) I turned and gazed back at the movie-goers, most of whom had a catatonic stunned look on their faces, that's when I made my move and bolted for the exit so as to avoid the exit stampede.

Biased against the actors and genre much? This wasn't a character drama with deep existential plotlines, it was an exciting suspense drama, and I think you went into the theater with expectations that ruined the movie for you. That said, I too agree there was a lack of build up and audience connection for the level of revenge we saw. However, F. Gary Gray probably did that on purpose to hold the mystery and maintain the suspense. Five minutes more set up at the top of the film, and one flashback during Foxx's talk in the tunnel with the CIA agent about Butlers life as a "think tank", and this movie would be golden! It's not going to win Academy Awards, but good Lord, 2/10? Have you not seen the crap that's come out in 2009? This is easily the best film so far!
