    Michael Clayton

Let it be said that I knew going into this movie that it was going to be a drama, and not a suspense movie. Even though the trailer seemed to build up tension and suspense, I knew that it would not be a fast-paced or even a medium-paced movie. However, I did not expect it to move at a turtle's pace. It is a very slow progressing movie. I'm sure they could have recut it to move a little quicker, or maybe cut out some of the dragging scenes. Enough about pace. The storyline is quite predictable, and you pretty much know where it's going, but it takes a few detours getting there. So no big surprises or plot twists. The acting is mixed. The first name worth mentioning is Tom Wilkinson. He delivers an amazing performance in his supporting role, and certainly outshines Clooney himself. Come Oscar time, Wilkinson should have himself another nomination, this time for supporting actor (he was nominated for lead actor for his excellent turn in "In The Bedroom") Bravo Tom! You made this movie worth sitting through! George Clooney is, well, George Clooney. They say you don't see the actor at all when an excellent or even great performance is delivered. Well, this is George Clooney, playing George Clooney. I'm starting to wonder if he's an over-rated darling. I like him, I really do, but I certainly didn't see the Oscar-worthiness of his turn in Syriana, especially not compared to say Matt Dillon's breath-taking performance in Crash. And as Michael Clayton, George plays George. Period. You see George, you hear George, and you think George. I had heard the possibility of his performance being worthy of another Oscar nomination. All I can say is if he does get a nomination for this work, then I will truly know that he is the industry darling. Tilda Swinton does a good job of portraying the troubled executive, so she does deserve some kuddos for that. And Sydney Pollack is, well, you guessed it, Sydney Pollack. He pretty much plays the exact same role as in Changing Lanes (w/ Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson) So, if you don't go out a lot and are looking forward to an evening at the movies, or if you are just looking for 2-hours of entertainment, I would strongly suggest you choose another movie. But if you are a die-hard movie fan, or just plain a George Clooney fan, I'm sure you will go and see this one. You may like it. You may adore it. I certainly hope you do if you spend money on this one. I, for one, was not impressed and expected a more tightly wound story. A generous 6/10, thanks to Tom Wilkinson!!!
