Partisan is a very well crafted film. The feature is quite a disturbing drama with elements of the thriller genre though not in what we normally think of as thrillers. We are located on a compound with one father, many mothers and the several children born in this 'apparently' safe haven. It's a frightening picture of those who live outside societal norms including the various rules and regulations that must be followed religiously especially by the children. There is an undertow of very real violence that runs through this piece while showing a loving, strong and self-sustaining environment. While seemingly benign a good deal of the time, Partisan strikes a core of vicious reactions on the part of the viewer which are truly alarming. French actor, Vincent Cassel adopts the right note as Gregori, the dad of the cult family, calm and kind with an altogether different and frightening side to his personality. What indeed happens when a few children develop to the point of independent thought processes? A brilliant film from 28 year old director Ariel Kleiman who also wrote the original screenplay. This film does not move along at lightning speed so it is not one that will appeal to the masses, but I strongly recommend it for the truths it reveals in and outside the norms of society as well as within ourselves... Brilliant.
