    Santa Fe Trail

This delightful film from Warner Brothers (1940) pairs Errol Flynn and the great 2 time Oscar Winner Olivia DeHavilland in one of the seven films they made together. It's directed by famed Michael Curtiz who won Best Director in 1944 for CASABLANCA and followed that in 1945 by another tremendous blockbuster, MILDRED PIERCE which won my beloved Joan Crawford an Oscar for a richly nuanced and brilliant performance.

This entertaining yarn deals with West Point Men in a fight against the infamous abolitionist John Brown, all of which led to the American Civil War. THIS MIGHT NOT BE A FACT OF THE MOVIE BUT ABOLITIONIST JOHN BROWN WAS HUNG AS A TRAITOR BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

I would say this is a typical studio system film, in this case from Warner Brothers, Jack Warner in charge of production, a film that both entertains and instructs. The studio stuck pretty well to historical facts, but of course, a little romance had to be thrown in to please the ladies of 1940.
