    The Grapes of Wrath

John Steinbeck's immortal novel about the Oklahoma dust bowl of the 30's is here recreated with such accuracy and finesse by director John Ford. In this 1940 production, Henry Fonda received his only Oscar nomination as Tom Joad. He would have to wait until 1980 (when he was very ill) to win his only Oscar. Fonda is total perfection as the ex-con now on a voyage with his entire family for the hope of a better life in California. Jane Darwell as the mother will break your heart with her immaculate work, an acting job that landed her the Best Supporting Actress of 1940. The who's who list of supporting players, many from the John Ford stable of actors help make this a classic American film which should not be missed under any circumstances though it is tough to witness the extreme conditions undergone by this migrant family.
