Woman in the Dunes was for a long time on my list of foreign films to watch. The film was nominated as Best Foreign Film in 1964 but lost out to Italy for "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow". I will admit I must have seen it too late in the evening because this allegory of circumstance, a wild surrealist tale did not speak to me much about life and the human condition. It's impeccably made, but like the Oscar voters of 1964, I believe I would have voted for a film that was much more all-inviting!
