James L. Brooks has not given us many movies, but those he has directed are all class A movies. As Good As It Gets gives us two Oscar winning performances in Jack N. and Helen Hunt with an Oscar nomination from Greg Kinnear who proves to be the best of the trio. Don't let Jack's foul mouth and disposition as Melvin Udall put you off because he does deliver a super delineated performance. The writing is smart, sensitive and funny, traits we have come to expect from Mr. Brooks. The film, to my mind, turns into a lovely miracle of sorts. This became Mr. Nicholson's 3rd Oscar, 2 for Best Lead Performance and one in the Supporting category.
