I love John Waters films as he actually says something in his films be it in a spoof or sarcastic way. He is Baltimore born and loves to poke fun at his own city, which is a pretty horrible place as I've been there a few times. Depp is so disarmingly young in this 1950's romp of a musical. I thought he did his own signing as he did in Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street some 25 years later. Apparently, he does not. In any even this is a fun film even though it seems very short and is over before you know it. Cry-Baby was tried out on Broadway not long ago, but it was not a big hit like John Waters's enormous smash Hairspray!
