    Little Men

Little Men is an American novel of 1871 by Louisa May Alcott in which Jo March the lead character of Little Women is all grown up and runs a private school for boys. How liberating for such a thought from Miss Alcott way back in the 19th Century. Kay Francis who was the Queen of the Warner lot before Bette Davis made few films after this 1940 venture. Directed by Norman Z. McLeod at RKO Studios, the picture was not a success yet had several charms about it. First of all Kay Francis herself, a statuesque actress who was unceremoniously fired from Warner Brothers. As Jo, she has to deal with a rebellious charge in Dan (Jimmy Conlin) Despite its huge and talented cast, the film is stolen by Jack Oakie as the con artist, Willie The Thief. Regardless its rocky start, Little Men is more popular now than ever since it is in the public domain. There is also a 1933 release of Little Men by Monogram, but this 1940 adaptation is a better telling of Alcott's tale. It boggles the mind why it did so poorly in 1940 and why there have been so many adaptations of LITTLE WOMEN while almost no one wants to attempt LITTLE MEN for the silver screen. I believe the 1940 version is the last of Little Men.
