A splendid period piece of the Communist movement in America directed and starring Warren Beatty. The movie is over three hours long and digs deep into the lives of pioneers of the movement, one of the most memorable being Emma Goldman played by Maureen Stapleton who won an Oscar for her indelible performance. Warren, Diane Keaton, Jack Nickolson, Jerzy Kosinski, Paul Sorvino, Edward Herrmann and the likes of old Hollywood like Bessie love make this a most memorable film experience. It was a shocker, in retrospect, that REDS did not win best film of the year. That honour went to 'Chariots of Fire', another film of great merit. Warren Beatty, however, did earn Oscar Best Director of 1981 for this formidable slice of history.
