IN A NUTSHELL: It delivers when it has to. It's inconsistent with that, sort of overwhelming and hammering away at you, amidst it's tone of eagerness. Likewise and in the end, this is no Dark Knight in it's delivery of writing, directing, and acting. But what this is, is a breathtaking liberation of ambition, imagination, inspiration, and vision of legendary spectacle, through driving intensity and emotion for it's cinematically influential story. A magnificent superhero conclusion that both surprises and satisfies from Nolan's enticing signature. IN PERSPECTIVE: The movie doesn't deliver the vision Nolan had. The vision is all I care about because that's what inspires me in movies. The ambition, the vision, and the imagination. Those things make a great foundation for a movie. But the delivery in it's writing, directing, and acting isn't nearly as good as that vision. It's an uplifting and spectacle-inspiring movie. It's story, however, is one of Nolan's best and certainly his best vision for a movie. His delivery isn't bad. In fact it's writing, directing, and acting is way better than most. But just doesn't match. Only at times. To most that'll be disappointing, but the way this movie was filmed was so magnificent. It's style of filmmaking is so rare, and raw. You just don't see that anymore. However, it's problems lie within the delivery of the vision of it's villain and darkness. Nolan almost overuses his dark material and really hammers away at the audience until they're completely overwhelmed and anxiety-strung. But he manages to balance that out with an extraordinary story ark that symbolizes the rise element that reaches one of the most powerful elements I have ever seen in a motion picture. That was masterful. That's why it had 0 oscar nominations. The vision was so appealing, and since it didn't match it, people are left underwhelmed from the delivery that was too-overwhelming. But the delivery wasn't bad. It wasn't great. It's inconsistent in it's delivery, and at times, and especially towards the sequences that elaborate the element of rise, the movie reaches utter brilliance. That's what I believe was the general opinion of audiences. Yet in hindsight, and from what I saw was a masterpiece of filmmaking, capturing the imagination from every visual of the film. The tone and feel of the movie may be off-putting or unexpected to some. But the look of this ever enduring picture is breathtaking. Nolan has created a monster of a movie here, and he must be disappointed from the response of many. Many will look at it as potential, with no delivery. But I see it and many do as, not his best work, best his most powerful work, as there are sequences in the film that stand out as some of the best sequences he's devised in his career. This movie builds to deliver those sequences. It's not the universal masterpiece Nolan wanted it. But in time, and trust me, this will be an enduring classic of not just the superhero genre, but of movie altogether. To me, this is a Nolan movie that you should expect. It's gorgeous, raw, and intense filmmaking symbolic of original, old-classic filmmaking. The Dark Knight Rises is a masterpiece and people don't even know it. It's heavy yes, and hard to handle. But once you watch this, you'll want to watch it again and again just to experience it's grand nature towards it's brilliant theme.
