Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Unfortunately in this age of accountant-driven films the advertising must be rigged so that the mass audience is encouraged to buy tickets, thinking it is one of the standard formula films delivering mindless escapist entertainment. This means that the advertising for quiet quirky little gems like this deliberately encourages people to come expecting to see a standard romcom, and films like "The American" are implied to be action adventure like Bourne or Bond. But this is a much better film than the run of the mill product churned out these days, and is geared to a more discerning audience. Most people who would appreciate this film will never see it. The ending evokes Harrison Ford's last lines in the theatrical version of Blade Runner: "We didn't know how long we had. But then again, who does?" Just like in real life everyone in the movie knows they have some finite period of time on Earth; it is what we choose to do with that time and who we choose to do it with that is important.
