    The American

Excellent movie, although should come with warnings - not for the general or immature audience. Perhaps unsuitable for those under 30? 40? 50? Sad that the other reviews here reflect an expectation or even a demand that movies should be completely explained as they go, and be based on a comic book, cartoon, video game, commercial, or children's book. Clooney is further exploring the theme from "Up in the Air"; that a life lived only for money is impoverished. The film is from the old, forgotten genre "suspense"; rather than being based on explosions or car chases or cgi effects, it slowly unravels the elements of the mystery, as it slowly cranks up the tension. The makers of the film seem to have revived the outmoded practice of hiring a writer, rather than just have the computer churn out the script. This suspense film was smooth, subtle, and sustained, and would have made Hitchcock proud.

I am 20 and saw this movie with my 54 year old father. I really liked it and he hated it. You were probably speaking generally, but I couldn't just let it go. I'm not sure exactly why my father didn't like it, it was late when the movie got out and didn't talk about it much and then he left town, but my point is, you don't have to be old to like this movie, and you don't have to be young to hate it. The only thing I didn't really like about this movie is how it ended. I would like to see it again though.

Thanks for your response. You are absolutely right - I was generalizing, and all generalizations are inaccurate in some cases. But if you want an idea of why your father hated it, look at some of the other reviews on here. Many were led to believe this would be another action-adventure movie, not an art film in the European style. I empathize with your disappoitnment in the ending, but there is some poetic justice in that he lived a life of violence, so he was in the end killed when he himself had turned into an innocent bystander, in a way.
