I made the mistake of reading the book first. The book detailed his endless frustrations and the huge effort and genius he had to put into solving each of the insurmountable problems. The trouble with the movie is that they didn't have nearly enough time to look into the details, which were the whole attraction of the book for me. At least they preserved some of his sense of humour.
