This aptly named film, focused on the growing up of Mason, a five year old boy who we will learn to understand and see time and life take effect over the course of some 12 years of life. One of the startling things to notice about this movie is who seamlessly and naturally Mason slowly ages in front of our very eyes, turning a boy into a young man. In fact, the movie ends at a moment where you see that the change has taken place and starting off in college the life of the man begins, meeting someone with whom he feels a kinship and the director leaves the rest to the imagination. This movie wasn't made for entertainment value so if that's what you are looking for you will be disappointed. It's a lifepiece in true form, observing the life and changes of a young boy, in what feels like a fairly relatable and genuine family story. The 3 hours will be hard to get through if you are lookong for Oscar worthy drama or action. While it does have its moments, this isn't its purpose.
