I've read the books, and I wasn't too disappointed about the film, I guess. I'm not so sure about "Mr. Bond" as Lyra's father, but the ice-bears were great, and so was Nicole Kidman. It's too bad that the director decided to explain everything away at the beginning of the movie - it's one of the beauties of the books that you figure things out slowly as you move through the three volumes. But, I guess, Chris Weitz wanted to make sure that even the the slowest in the audience caught on.
