Special effects are good but unrealistic but the movie as a whole was unbelievable - not in a good way, I mean not enough plot or writing to get into the movie as something that could happen.

I couldn't agree with you more. You have hit the nail on the head there with your comment... much more than anyone else for some reason... Your strong point is that the movies lack of 'believability' which is a crime of a lot of hollywood tripe, but 2012 problem is more to do with 'acceptability'. If you can bottle what you mean by your comment you could be a millionaire, because thats the ingredient that is missing from so many movies from hollywood these days...
The plot was actually just the end of the world and the government hiding secret ships to survive and let everyone around them (that is consider not important to "society") left behind to die.
