    Belle

The premise of the film is certainly wonderful and the cast superb on paper... from Tom Wilkinson, Emily Watson, Miranda Richardson, Penelope Wilton, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and the amazing MATTHEW GOODE who can do no wrong in my books. However, I was expecting a bit more from this film that deals with so many important themes from illegitimacy, racism, class structure even the problem of slavery. The cast is stellar, but what falls short is the screenplay, a fairly traditional, only acceptable one in terms of the weighty material it is dealing with. Secondly, the script doesn't allow for the greatest of character development. Big Fault! I see that most have rated the film very highly, but for the stated reasons, the film worked only on the most basic of levels for me. No one can go very far without a top notch script.
