Inglourious Basterds

Click here to show this review. I had higher hopes for this film. I think it was a brilliant idea on the part of Tarantino to do a black comedy on the Nazis and Jewish and Allies revenge. It's almost as if he held back, afraid he might offend. I found many sequences and scenes, drawn out and lacking humour. The plot didn't have the intrigue and thrill-factor I was expecting based on his other work. I like how he based Colonel Hans Landa's character on Himmler, the sick [...] who actually thought he could defect to the Allies and perhaps be named Minister of police in Germany by President Eisenhower. I thought that whole thing could have been milked for good humour. Could have been shown more cruelty, the film was low on violence by QT standards, which would have made the payoff all the sweeter. Maybe show Landa milking cows or something (poor cows) Brad Pitt was good in this role, I knew he would be. He does well in comedic roles. But I don't think his talents were used to the maximum effect they could have been. I also thought there could have been more thrilling aspects to Shosanna and her pompous prick of a suitor in terms of the danger she was in. Usually in Tarantino's flicks, the bad guys really ARE bad guys. They came off half-baked and non-threatening in this film. Last comment the basterds could have been SO much funnier. Hogan's Heroes QT style. Their violence against the Germans came off as serious instead of campy. Something not quite right in the arrangement of those scenes, EXCEPT for the last one where the two basterds rifle the crowd in the theatre, although that could have been ramped up gore wise. I give it a 6 because I really wanted this film to do well, and the idea was so excellent. Favorite line: I don't speak Italian. That's why he's third best.
