Money Monster is the kind of film that unfolds exactly as you'd expect and isn't nearly as probing and insightful as it should be. No joke, if you've watched the trailer, you've seen the movie. There are no surprises, very few thrills and no dramatic payoff whatsoever. The film does benefit from a trio of terrific performances from Clooney, Roberts and particularly Jack O'Connell as the young hostage taker, but the simplistic script never allows any of them to say or do anything meaningful, or even all that relatable. Considering director Jodie Foster's talent at, well, everything, I was surprised she saw this script as something in dire need of telling. The allegory behind it certainly is a story worth telling, but the film never tells that story, it just nibbles around the edges. Other than the acting, a thoroughly so so effort.
