This bio-pic of ego-maniacal singer/entertainer Al Jolson is as entertaining a feature that one could hope for. The film has had other versions but nothing will surpass this big, glossy musical with Larry Parks in absolutely outstanding form as Al Jolson, a role for which he received an Oscar Nomination for Best Male Actor in 1946. The entire supporting cast (his Jeiwish family) and the secular part of his world are right on the money with Evelyn Keyes in the pivotal role of the long-suffering wife. It's all a bit sad as Larry Parks was caught up in the hunt for Communist sympathizers in Hollywood of the late forties and fifties and was never able to forge on with his promising career. He was blacklisted which meant the end of his career.
