As much as I love Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix as actors, this film is just too slow. The story depicts how a vulnerable down-and-out alcoholic gets caught up in a cult, similar to scientology. I felt a sick feeling in my stomach throughout, as this poor disenfranchised fellow, bereft of family or friend, participates in these ridiculous psychological "tests", all for the affection of the charismatic leader. I called b. s. on Hoffman's character right from the get go, with all his condescending let-me-heal-you comments. I hate to see a vulnerable person get taken advantage of and this film spares the viewer no mercy in that regard. Watch it if only to see two great actors completely immerse in their roles. But the story-line is too dismal for me.
