As a fan of Johnny Depp I find it distressing that you have to look back nearly five years to Michael Mann's Public Enemies to find his last truly good film and a role worthy of his talent. It seems the gifted performer who loved challenging roles and could do anything has become somewhat watered down these last few years and this latest bland entry Transcendence will do him no favors in the "back on track" department. Yes its got a big budget, high priced acting talent and plot enough for 4 movies, but none of this can conceal the total failure on the part of the screenwriter to properly develop any of the intriguing ideas brought up in the cookie-cutter narrative. It's all mashed together in an unconvincing heap of pseudo scientific mumbojumbo and loud, mostly pointless action scenes. It not only wastes the significant talents of Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy on frivolous supporting roles but also forces Rebecca Hall to blubber at a computerized Depp talking head for most of the film, highlighting the fact that Depp is used here purely as window dressing with literally no role to speak of. A waste of a few intriguing ideas and a lot of great actors, not to mention 2 hrs of your life.
