The time frame of the movie and the theme were totally anathema to each other in this riveting drama of abortion in the United Kingdom when, as almost everywhere else it was a criminal offence. Mike Leigh takes this idea and turns it into a brilliant film with a legendary performance by Imelda Staunton who almost underplays the title character and for whom we have great sympathy. There's always a fear of discovery by the authorities of Vera's secret work as the film progresses, thus the suspense heightens acutely. Miss Staunton was nominated for an Oscar for her brilliant work, but the American competition was too great let alone the idea of giving the Oscar to yet another Brit. However Imelda did win BAFTA, the British Oscar and deservedly so. A Must See Film for anyone interested in great films that explore massive ideas.
