Click here to show this review. The lack of financial success for this film is something of a small tragedy. Not only is it one of the best movies of the year, but it is one of the more honest and almost heart-breakingly realistic stories of a damaged man and his two sons. Nolte gives a pull out all the stops performance as the father of two sons both of whom decide to compete in a gruelling UFC elimination tournament. One, a physics teacher and family man is competing so the bank won't seize his house. The other, an ex-marine is competing for the widow of a fallen comrade. These somewhat familiar themes in the script are dwarfed by the powerful and emotionally charged relationship of these men with their father, a man whom both sons really hate. I don't mean there is the big emotional scene where all the anger comes out and all is forgiven (à la mushy M. O. W.) The film goes out of its way to not deal with the emotional scarring both men have endured at the hands of their drunken father and their is no resolution or at least not the one certain audiences might want. The UFC action is tough, aggressive and exiting as it should be and Hardy (to be seen as Bane in the DKR) is an absolute beast with an intense stare that could crack a concrete wall. A real winner go see it!!!
