People have been raving about Brooklyn since it first premiered. After a very slow expansion through the US and Canada, it finally came to my local theatre! The praise for this film has been incredible, and I'm glad it is, because Brooklyn is a damn good film!
Saoirse Ronan gives one hell of a great performance. This was hands-down the best performance she's ever given, and I expect that she will get nominated for Best Actress. The amount of sheer emotion she displays floored me. Emory Cohen was incredibly likeable as one of Eilis's love-interests. He is charming and often very funny. The rest of the supporting cast including Domhnall Gleeson were very impressive.
The story of Brooklyn, though fairly common and clichéd, was well handled. The whole love-triangle plot has been done hundreds of times, but Brooklyn is a very refreshing take on it! The characters were fantastic and very realistic, which made the story even more enthralling. The cinematography, direction, editing and musical score are all fantastic and polished. The writing is also great, blending dramatic and comedic dialogue very nicely.
Overall, Brooklyn is a polished love story with excellent acting, beautiful cinematography and superb direction. See it!
