This Is Where I Leave You

I was actually looking forward to This Is Where I Leave You. I love the cast as the trailers were pretty solid. Unfortunately, aside from a couple of moments here and there, This Is Where I Leave You is a mediocre drama with very few funny moments. The story follows a very dysfunctional Jewish family as they sit in a shiva house for seven days and trouble ensues. With a cast of amazing comedians such as Jason Bateman, Tina Fay and Adam Driver, I expected this movie to be a total riot. But no, it wasn't. One of my biggest problems with this movie was its false advertisement. This Is Where I Leave You is a total drama with very little funny moments. I could count about three times I actually laughed. Many jokes were also repeated over and over again until they became tiring and simply not funny anymore. The cast does the best they could with their material. Every single member of the cast do great jobs, especially Adam Driver as the annoying and obnoxious brother. I am looking more and more forward to seeing him in the new Star Wars film. Tina Fay is easily the best character, with a relatable personality. The only problem here is that the cast is INCREDIBLY underused. You have a cast of hilarious and brilliant actors, and you give them mediocre material to work with. Another thing; there were way too many subplots. Apart from the main story, there were four or five subplots and only one of them really needed to be in the movie! This movie wasn't entirely bad, though. The few times I laughed, I laughed very hard. Though most of the dramatic elements felt sappy and stupid, some were actually very touching and surprisingly well handled. Again, the cast is extremely good and the plot wasn't entirely awful. Overall, though not entirely bad, This Is Where I Leave You is a mediocre dramedy with very few funny moments and an underused cast. Rent it if you're interested. RATING: 5/10.
