I love the first Zoolander. It is insanely quotable and contains some of the funniest gags I've ever seen in a film. When they first announced Zoolander 2, I was excited and scared at the same time. But, considering Ben Stiller is writing, directing, and starring in it, I had faith. Well, I was wrong. Zoolander 2 is one of the absolute worst comedies I've seen in years.
Zoolander 2's biggest problem is how unfunny it is. I laughed twice and giggled a few times. For a comedy that is just over 90 minutes, I was in total silence almost the whole film. It wasn't just me, though. The whole audience was awkwardly quiet. After a while, I was bored and waiting for it to end.
The story is fittingly ridiculous. I didn't give a crap about any of the characters or the plot, but I expected that. The new characters are almost all unfunny and stupid for the sake of being stupid. Zoolander is obviously supposed to be self-aware and dumb, but it was cringe-worthy rather than being funny.
There are more celebrity cameos in Zoolander 2 than jokes that hit. A few of these were genuinely funny, but the majority of them were just so the audience would say "hey, I know that guy".
Zoolander 2 had its moments. I laughed a couple of times and there were a few clever gags, but the movie was too boring, unfunny and cringe-worthy to warrant any kind of recommendation. It is incredibly disappointing. Don't see it.
