    Signs

Everything in the film is part of the history of this somewhat mystical country family with roots in American traditions. The big problem is why the mother was lost in a tragic accident that led to the father renouncing his position as a member of the clergy. There is an alien invasion by demonic creatures which is hinted to be an apocalyptic consequence of some horrible failure in the government and society of the US and others globally. The catastrophe is not just a question of UFOs. Shyamalan conveys a real sense that the end of the world is impending because spiritual values such as love are declining. The evil extraterrestrials are "signs" of a grave crisis in our destiny, and the need for the solution to a realistic problem of love for children, life and humanity. Very similar to Spielberg.
